Many people think they know Charles Dickens’s classic tale of a bitter old miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, who, thanks to a series of ghostly encounters, learns to embrace the spirit of Christmas. But while the story of Scrooge’s redemption has been retold countless times over the years, A Christmas Carol retains its ability to surprise and provoke. It’s not just that Dickens shaped popular notions of the celebration of Christmas – though his narrative certainly left its mark on the holiday. The novella’s definition of the “spirit” of the season as a blend of earthly pleasures and selfless benevolence offers a heartwarming picture of how kindness and care for others can save an individual soul and, at the same time, a haunting warning. Alternately comical, sentimental and horrifying, Dickens’s creation entertains without shying away from its larger message about the dangers – both personal and societal – of ignoring Want and Ignorance and otherwise eschewing responsibility for those in need.
Biografía del autor:
Nació en Badajoz en 1967. Estudió Bellas Artes en la Universidad Complutense y Diseño Gráfico en St. Martins, Londres. Después de unos años en publicidad, pasó a la ilustración como actividad profesional. Entre sus libros podemos destacar, El conde de Montecristo, Libro de Pares y BeBop. Colabora habitualmente en prensa y para las principales editoriales españolas y extranjeras.
Nieto y biznieto de editores, desde pequeño le dominó la pasión por la lectura, la escritura, el dibujo y la música. Estudio Filosofía y Letras, es licenciado en Derecho y fue profesor de Historia del Arte y Literatura. En 1960 publicó Jorobita, un relato infantil prologado por Delibes y que ganó el Premio Jauja de cuentos de ese año. De 1987 es Román y yo, un relato tierno e irónico sobre el mundo de los vampiros, y de 1989 esa joya de teatro infantil que es La doncella y el unicornio. Aparte de un excelente traductor, galardonado con el Premio Nacional de Traducción por Silvia y Bruno de Carroll, ha publicado La vuelta al mundo en ochenta mundos (1982), libro ingenioso e inclasificable, y la novela La inmortalidad del cangrejo (1985). Sus traducciones y comentarios críticos siempre son sabios e ingeniosos.
